How the MAGP (Microscope assisted FUE) provides better result than normal FUE or Normal DHT / DHI

1. In normal FUE or DHT or DHI the graft extraction process is done at 2.5 – 4 X magnification . so graft quality is same in each of these techniques
2. In MAGP we use 10 X – 25 X magnification instead of 2.5 – 4 X magnification. It provides following advantages to improve quality of grafts

• It provides better definition of hair scalp angle. So when the punch is inserted parallel to hair direction to cut skin around graft then possibility of partial transection reduces . It increases number of hair in your hair transplant in same number of grafts.
• It provides better comparison of grafts when we extract them . We can see even 10 – 20 % difference in thickness of hair and grafts . If we are able to extract 10 % thicker grafts then volume increase is 21 % , If graft thickness can be increase 15 % then extra volume generated is 32 % ( formula to calculate hair volume is  πr²L where r = radius of hair and L = length of hair ) . So thicker hair selection means 20 – 30 % extra volume or blackness ( commonly referred as density by patients ) in comparison to normal FUE or DHT .
• At higher magnification surgeon can better see number of hair in each graft. So the grafts with higher number of hair can be selected by surgeon more efficiently than normal FUE or normal DHT process . So you get more number of hair in same number of grafts in MAGP Technique  .

How much better result can be provided by better graft selection in terms of thickness of hair

• Under high magnification of microscope – we can have better comparison of hair thickness in grafts when we extract them . We can see even 10 – 20 % difference in thickness of hair and grafts .
• Volume of hair can be calculated by assuming that hair is a cylindrical structure. Formula to calculate hair volume is  πr²L where r = radius of hair and L = length of hair
• So if diameter or radius increases ( hair thickness increases ) then same number of hair have more volume. So they provide more blackness on your scalp . Results looks more dense.
• If we are able to extract 10 % thicker grafts then volume increase is 21 % (  π X 1.1r X 1.1 r L  = 1.21 πr²L 
• If graft thickness can be increase 15 % then extra volume generated is 32 % ( formula to calculate hair volume is  πr²L where r = radius of hair and L = length of hair ) . So thicker hair selection means 20 – 30 % extra volume or blackness ( commonly referred as density by patients ) in comparison to normal FUE or DHT .

Collection of hair/follicles which are adjacent to each other is called follicular unit. A follicular unit can have 1 – 4 hair or follicles. When follicular unit (FU) is taken out from your scalp, it is called Graft. So One graft has 1 – 4 follicles or 1 – 4 hair.

Normally about 5 – 10 % hair units or grafts contain single hair. About 40 – 50 % grafts or FU contain two hair. About 40 % grafts or FU have three hair. About 5 – 10 % may have more than 3 hair. This distribution depends on age, sex, stage of baldness, donor area condition etc.

Calculation of grafts in FUE Surgery

If surgeon score your skin to extract graft, he defines it successful graft harvest even if one hair root is intact during graft extraction process even if original Follicular unit has 3 or 4 hair roots. For example one follicular unit has 4 hair and surgeon extracts it intact then it is called one graft . If one hair out of four is damaged then also it is called 1 graft . If two hair gets damaged and two hair are intact then also it is called 1 graft. If three hair get damaged and one hair is intact then also surgeon calls it one graft . So surgeons calculate it as one graft even if one root is intact and three has got damaged. Because of this calculation error same number of grafts can have highly different  hair numbers and your hair transplant result will depend on number of hair also.

If a hair technician is harvesting grafts he may have very high complete or partial transection rate of grafts. He may deliver you 1200 hair in 1000 grafts . If an unexperienced  surgeon is harvesting 1500 hair in 1000 grafts and other is harvesting 2300 hair in 1000 grafts the possibility of denser result will be more in surgeon who is harvesting more intact FUE units from your scalp .
